Archanna

Her Story

For Archanna the beauty standards she experienced came from society and cultural norms. She said " I’m naturally tall and slim, usually seen as the “ideal” but it was not quite this simple. From a young age even until now , I have people comment on my height, telling me to stop growing like I have some sort of control or to find a husband quickly because there aren’t many tall ones around. I also got targeted for my weight, “why are you on a diet”, “you’re too thin, do you not eat”. So why did Archanna never feel like she was included. It’s because she's not seen as “perfect”, When i asked what she meant, she said "I don’t have that “perfect” nose, I had acne and still have scarring because of it and maybe my chest isn’t big enough. There was always something that wasn't 'good' enough according everyone else.

Her Overcoming

.
Through her experiences she realised the reality and that is that perfection doesn’t exist and in fact our imperfections are what make up our perfect. So now she loves herself wholeheartedly because there is no one else like her in this world. She is unique and it’s not just about who she is physically. She said " As cheesy as it sounds, it’s about what’s inside that really matters and I know I’m awesome!"

What we love about her

Archanna is such a caring young soul! We love her passion for change with things that are so important to the future generations. Things like how we perceive ourselves and being sustainable today for the us tomorrow. She is a total bad ass dancer and we are completely obsessed with the energy she brings into the room!

Lily

Her Story

Lily was born and raised in China where beauty is very much one-dimensioned. To be the kind of ‘perfect’ girl she needs to be, not only did she need to work hard to be smart, she also needs to ‘work hard’ to be pretty - starve herself, dress up in certain ways, behave in certain ways. In people’s mind, a girl trying to be quirky and fun simply is not “a good influence”. She felt very trapped despite the fact that her mom always told her to be true to herself and stand up for what she believes in.

Her Overcoming

After high school, she decided to make decisions that will make her happy, she later studied in the Netherlands and traveled around Europe. The more places she visits the more she realise how unique every single girl is and should be. Now she is a data engineer living in London and on her journey to more adventures, and breaking the boundaries of being a “nerdy young lady”.

What we love about her

Lily exudes femininity and bad-ass energy all at the same time. Her love and care can be seen in the various house plants she cares for (check out @lilsplants) and she's the best Mummy to Nala (check out @lils_nala). Her boss attitude comes out during a party- she's quick witted and always a good laugh. We adore Lily!

Nicole

Her Story

When asked about why she wanted to take part in our campaign, she said: “When I was younger, I never saw anyone who looked like me in teen magazines or on TV, so my sense of self has always felt very singular and isolated. I was also the only bigger person I knew as well, even as a child. As jewellery became a new style outlet for me, I also found that even the jewellery industry has size bias. When was the last time you saw a hand model with sausage fingers like mine? Or a double chin in a shot of a necklace stack for a high-end brand? Big people can have big money too!”

Her Overcoming

Looking back, she’s realised how dismissed plus-size individuals are in style industries, despite recent progress: “If I can be the person I needed to see when I was younger - and still today - for another person struggling with their body and self image, then my work is done.”

What we love about her

Nicole may not have had the role model she needed growing up but we are so honoured and proud that she is the role model young girls need now. She is so sweet and giving and we are so excited to see how she continues to blossom helping generations to come.

Piriya

Her Story

Meet Piriya, a 25 years old who works in health care but also has a passion for the creative arts and an appreciation for beautiful things. Growing up in the south asian community being darker skinned and not having the desired sleek straight hair like others, wasn’t the easiest experience. for her She never felt accepted by her peers and always felt like the features that now make me unique, are what made me feel insecure at a young age. She said "At that age, I never saw any individuals with the same complexion or hair type as myself within the community so naturally it made me want to change those things to fit in and look beautiful by what I thought were the societal standards of beauty. "

Her Overcoming

Through the years and having now seen individuals in the beauty industry that she can relate to, it made her realise that those unique features that you hold are what makes you different and beautiful. Being part of the Venu J campaign for Piriya  made her realise that beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, colours etc. She always strongly believed that the jewellery you wear is a way of expressing yourself and with the rings that she wears made by Venu J, they remind her of the strong and empowering women that represent the brand. A change she welcomes with open arms.

What we love about her

Piriya is a confident force! We loved her raw and open personality. We absolutely loved how bubbly and how easy she is to get on with.  We especially love how much she enjoys giving back and doing something kind for others. And not to mention her lush curls - WOW.

Adriana

Her Story

Adriana moved to  Spain as a child, into a community that didn't make her feel beautiful. From the name calling to the ignorant comments she felt like she had to continuously defend herself. She says the kids used to taunt her for looking different and called her Pocahontas due to her tanner skin and dark hair (BTW, we think Pocahontas is smoking hot! So who's  laughing now?). Her experience made her feel like a complete outcast.

Her Overcoming

She was only 11, but young Adriana made it her job not to make any other girl feel the way she did. When a new girl joined her school from a different past of South America, she made sure to take them on, look after them and created a sisterhood where the protected each other.

What we love about her

Adriana is a bundle of energy and joy. When we interviewed her, she told us there is nothing she loves more than seeing another woman win. She wants to be the kind of friend that fixes your crown, that raises you and supports you. We love that she values support over competition and that is so rare to find

Liveleen

Her Story

Liveleen is a Mother of four and an absolute super star. At the ripe age of 54, she has had multiple heart attacks, strokes and chronic kidney failure. Her extensive medication list has caused her to lose her teeth BUT not her beautiful smile. She has to use a line to do dialysis at the hospital 3 times a week and hated her body because of it - "I would look at the tubes hanging out of me and feel like I was no longer a human. How could I ever be beautiful to anyone?". After surviving all of these medical issues she could never get over her feeling of being ugly and unwanted by society. F that!

Her Overcoming

When her Son got her a necklace she was apprehensive and admitted to keeping it in a drawer, away from sunlight and others' gaze. Her Son tells us "she had a hard time but when we explained it was a way for us to always be with her and closer to her heart she wore the necklace and hasn't taken it off since. She now can't take it off! She mentions that it is more than just a necklace, it is a constant reminder that she is loved, beautiful and that she is more than tubes and a wheelchair".

What we love about her

Liveleen is everyone's Mum! She is nurturing, kind and has the softest soul. During the photoshoot she was nervous but when it came to telling her story she was really powerful and inspiring. Thank you Mama!
